Leslieville and Riverdale are, from a climbing point of view, some of the tightest work in the city. Victorian and Edwardian semis packed close together, mutual drives shared between neighbours, and back gardens measured in single-digit metres.

There is often genuinely nowhere to put a piece of wood down. That means small sections, careful rigging, and sometimes carrying everything through the house-width gap between buildings to the street. It is slow, precise work and it is most of what we do in this part of the city.

What we see most often here

• Manitoba maple. Enormously common in east-end back gardens because it self-seeds anywhere. Fast, weak-wooded, short-lived and prone to dropping limbs — a large share of our Riverdale removals are these.
• Rear-lane hydro. Many back gardens have overhead conductors running along the lane. Anything growing into them changes how — and whether — we can work.
• Mutual drive access. Worth a word with your neighbour before the day, since we may need to work across the shared strip.
• Crowded, drawn-up trees. Trees squeezed between houses grow tall and thin reaching for light, which makes them more vulnerable in wind than their trunk size suggests.
