After a heavy storm the priority is making things safe, in the right order. A limb already on the ground is a mess; a limb hung up in the canopy above a driveway is a hazard, and it is the one to deal with first.
If a tree or a large limb has come down on your property, call us. If it is on wires, on a road, or touching anything electrical, call Toronto Hydro and 911 first — not us, and please do not go near it.

If a tree is on power lines, stop
Treat every downed wire as live. Stay well back, keep children and pets inside, and call Toronto Hydro at 416-542-8000 — or 911 if there is any immediate danger. Utility crews have to make the line safe before any tree work can begin. No tree is worth the risk, and no reputable arborist will approach an energised conductor.
Once the line is confirmed safe, we can take care of the tree.
What to do while you wait
- Keep everyone clear of the area, including from directly underneath a hung-up limb. They shift without warning.
- Photograph everything before anything is moved — insurers will want it.
- Do not try to cut a limb that is under tension. A branch bent under load stores an enormous amount of energy and releases it the moment it is cut. This is how people get seriously hurt with a chainsaw.
- Move cars out from under any damaged tree.
Common questions
Can a storm-damaged tree be saved?
It depends what broke. A tree that has lost a few limbs will usually recover well once the torn wood is cut back cleanly. A tree that has split at a main union, lost more than roughly half its crown, or begun to lift at the roots is a different conversation. We will assess it and give you a straight answer rather than defaulting to removal.
Will my insurance cover it?
That is between you and your insurer, and policies vary a great deal — but coverage often depends on what the tree fell on rather than the tree itself. We can provide a written assessment of the damage and the work required, which is usually what an adjuster asks for. We are not insurance advisors, so check the specifics with your provider.
How quickly can you come out?
