Leaside, Davisville and North Toronto have some of the finest mature tree canopy in the city, and it is no accident — these streets were laid out with generous setbacks and the trees have had eighty or ninety years to fill them.

That changes the nature of the work. Here we are far more often preserving trees than removing them: crown thinning to reduce wind loading, deadwood removal from large old maples and oaks, and cabling to hold together unions that would otherwise mean losing a landmark tree.

Renovation? Protect the tree before the excavator arrives

Midtown sees a great deal of renovation and infill construction, and construction is one of the biggest killers of established trees in Toronto — usually not from anything dramatic, but from soil compaction and root severance during excavation. Damage shows up two or three years later as crown dieback, by which point it is often too late.

The City requires tree protection measures around protected trees on construction sites, and a project affecting a protected tree needs to be planned with that in mind from the start. If you have work coming up, get the tree question settled early rather than at the point the permit is held up.

  • Large heritage-scale oaks and maples needing careful maintenance pruning
  • Cabling and bracing as an alternative to losing a landmark tree
  • Construction-adjacent work and tree protection planning
  • Nearly every tree here is protected under the by-law — assume a permit is in play

We cover Leaside, Bayview, Davisville, Mount Pleasant and the surrounding midtown streets.
