Some trees are structurally weak in one specific place while being perfectly healthy everywhere else. The classic case is a co-dominant stem — two trunks of similar size meeting in a tight V, often with bark trapped in the union. That joint is far weaker than it looks, and it is the point that fails in a storm.
Cabling and bracing installs hardware that limits how far those parts can move apart, sharing the load between them. It is not a cure and it does not make a tree indestructible — but on the right tree it converts a removal into another twenty or thirty years of shade.

Is your tree a candidate?
Support systems work best on trees that are fundamentally sound with one identifiable weakness. Good signs:
- A tight V-shaped union between two similar-sized stems, particularly on maple, elm and ash
- A long, heavy horizontal limb over something you care about
- A crack at a union that has not yet extended far into the trunk
- A healthy crown and no significant decay at the base
Where it does not work: a tree with extensive trunk decay, a failing root plate, or a crown already in decline. Cabling a structurally compromised tree gives false confidence, and that is worse than no cable at all. If your tree is in that category we will say so plainly rather than sell you hardware.
Cables are not fit-and-forget
A tree keeps growing around its hardware. Cables and rods should be inspected periodically — roughly every few years — to check tension, hardware condition and whether the tree has grown around the fittings. If you have inherited a tree with old cables in it, it is well worth having them looked at.
Common questions
How long does a cable last?
The hardware itself can last decades, but it needs periodic inspection rather than being left indefinitely. As a rough guide, having the system checked every few years catches problems like slackening, corrosion, or the tree growing around the fitting.
Will cabling guarantee my tree won't fail?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. A support system meaningfully reduces the risk of a specific predicted failure. It does not make the tree immune to an extreme storm, and it does nothing about defects elsewhere. It is risk reduction, not risk elimination.
Is it cheaper than removing the tree?
Usually, yes — often substantially. And it keeps a mature tree, which is worth real money in property value and shade. That said, it is only the right call if the tree is otherwise sound.
Does installing a cable damage the tree?
Static systems involve drilling through the stems, which the tree seals over — a well-placed installation causes far less harm than the failure it prevents. Dynamic systems use a non-invasive strap around the stems with no drilling at all, and suit many situations. We will recommend whichever fits your tree.
